Mitch McConnell is the junior Senator from Kentucky. He is up for re-election in 2020. During his time as a senator, he has gained a lot of attention because of his stance on immigration and his support for the Tea Party movement. Unfortunately, in many ways, he is quite conservative. According to the Courier-Online, “He is often at odds with tea party members over his views on the role of the federal government in education, the environment, and foreign policy. Many tea party supporters fear that Mitch McConnell may put them on the defense when it comes to national security issues.”
The reason that Mitch McConnell is so hawkish is that he represents much of what’s wrong with modern conservatism. In its present form, the movement has grown frustrated with how special interest groups and politicians have manipulated politics. They’ve demanded more from the elected officials, and they’ve gotten less. They’re not satisfied with the gridlock that’s holding Washington back. And they’ve had enough of Washington’s inability to deliver on its promises.
But they also don’t think that the president is a legitimate president, and thus any of his agenda, including health care reform, is illegitimate. This means that if Obama were to get anything done, including health care reform, those who opposed his policies would have a legitimate argument. But that’s just the point. The point is that all presidents get something done eventually.
When will that happen? There’s no telling. There’s no way to predict when an incumbent president will get re-elected. History is full of examples of presidents getting re-elected before their parties even win the popular vote. So the one thing that’s for certain is that there will be a lot of fighting for the upcoming elections.
The fact that Mitch McConnell is seen as one of President Bush’s “loves” reflects how Democrats feel about the race. Remember when John McCain ran against Obama and talked about how “hope” was slipping away from the Democrats and that the country was moving rightward? While many in the media ignored his comments and focused on a bad idea, millions of people across the country loved what he had to say.
As for Mitch McConnell, he’ll be remembered for his work as a minority leader in the Senate. He was an extremely effective leader, and he showed a lot of ability to get things done. However, as time has gone by, there’s been speculation that he may have run for president in the future. Some Democratic insiders have said that they had a feeling that he might seek to become the next president. The timing could either be right or wrong, but most people agree that he’s unlikely to run for president anytime soon.
Another interesting part of this whole situation is that Kentucky’s senior senator, Rand Paul, is one of the loudest critics of how Mitch McConnell runs the chamber. As recently as last week, Paul told CNN’s reporter John King that he didn’t see why anyone should be concerned with the fact that one man holds the seat of the U.S. Senate. He also went so far as to say that the current system is already “fair to all Americans.” In other words, he believes that everyone in the country should be happy with the current system, including the folks who hold the U.S. Senate seat.
So what does this mean for the upcoming elections? For one thing, it means that every seat up for election in the U.S. House of Representatives will be up for grabs. If no one gets an early lead, the other parties will likely file even more ads about their candidates. Whoever ends up winning the race will then be the new minority leader.
